Shifting with the Seasons: New Schedule at La Cocina

Change is the only constant, but here in Cabarete, it moves to a specific rhythm. As a coastal town shaped heavily by the flows of the global tourism industry, our community experiences the sharp contrasts between "high" and "low" travel seasons. Right now, we are navigating the quiet of the low season.

But hunger doesn't take a vacation. Paired with worldwide inflation and the skyrocketing costs of basic food, the economic pressures on our most vulnerable neighbors, historically excluded families, disabled, elderly folk, and unemployed parents, are intensifying.   

At Cabarete Sostenible, we don't believe in the extraction model that tourism so often brings to the Dominican Republic. We believe in adaptation, resilience, and local sovereignty. To keep standing strong as a community-led pillar, we are adjusting our sails.

The New Schedule at La Cocina Comunitaria

To ensure we are maximizing our resources, minimizing waste, and staying financially sustainable through these tougher months, we are shifting our operating hours at La Cocina Comunitaria.  

Starting this week, our new schedule is:

• Tuesday through Friday

• 11:30 AM to 2:30 PM

• Please note: We are temporarily eliminating Saturday service from our schedule.

Looking Ahead: We plan to reassess and potentially bring back Saturday service when the high season returns and the town gets busier, around October.

More Than a Restaurant: A Social Enterprise for Food Aid

It is vital to remember that La Cocina Comunitaria isn't just a place to get a fresh, nutritious meal, it is a radical social enterprise designed to subvert a broken food system.  

Every single plate served here helps fund and sustain our broader food aid program. Through our Vegetarian Comedor, we actively redistribute nourishment to those suffering from severe food insecurity.

Since we opened our doors back in December 2023 , this community kitchen has already served over 1,383 hot plates to families in need throughout Cabarete!
