COMMUNITY FARMING
Cabarete Sostenible combats food insecurity through community-led spaces for civic agriculture.
We opened the first and only community garden, El Jardin Comunitario, of Cabarete, followed by a community farm, Finca Comunitaria in the neighborhood of Callejon de la Loma. Cabarete Sostenible believes that sustainable farming projects offer a solution to the lack of food sovereignty in the region by creating a network of diverse food options.
Both the Community Garden and Farm are public spaces serving as hands-on educational and informational centers. Cabarete Sostenible strives to create an environment that is welcoming to both gardening novices to the island’s experts in methods of ecological farming.
Cabarete Sostenible welcomes all those who wish to get their hands in the ground in our collective mission to end food insecurity through regenerative methods of community farming. Volunteers give back to their community with an understanding that all harvests support our Emergency Food Aid Program or are transformed in our Community Kitchen to fund our work

Since opening in April 2020, volunteers and farming experts have helped design and maintain our spaces—cleaning land, planting native species, implementing fast-growing techniques, and building strong community collaboration. We also host free workshops and events for adults and children, covering topics such as permaculture, seed germination, composting, herb spirals, and banana circles.
Across all sites, we use organic, regenerative, and ancestral farming practices. Synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, GMOs, and artificial products are strictly prohibited.
La Canasta Sostenible
Roots of Cabarete: La Canasta Sostenible is a monthly subscription basket filled with seasonal, organically grown produce from our community garden, community farm and local small producers plus handcrafted goods made by local artisans.

This is a grassroots effort to strengthen the local food system and provide access to healthy, chemical-free food grown right here in Cabarete.

What is food sovereignty?
First coined by La Via Campesina, food sovereignty is the people’s right to healthy and culturally appropriate food produced through environmentally conscious and sustainable methods, and their right to define their own food and agriculture systems. Food Sovereignty is a global movement uniting to fight for food justice.

What is food insecurity?
To suffer from food insecurity is to experience a lack of consistent access to enough nutritious food for a healthy life. The average resident of Cabarete does not have more than 3 days worth of food at home.

What is civic agriculture?
Community-based agriculture and food production activities that meet the local and cultural demands for safe, fresh and sustainable food. It is tied to the social and economic development of the community by encouraging entrepreneurship and ownership of our daily nutrition.
