LA COCINA:
COMMUNITY KITCHEN

La Cocina Comunitaria, or community kitchen, in the heart of the second-largest neighborhood of Cabarete, serves as the base camp for the development of all of our food sovereignty projects. La Cocina hosts a vegetarian restaurant with a unique twist on traditional Dominican cuisine.

Drawing inspiration from the beloved Dominican "comedores," our Vegetarian Eatery invites patrons to craft their own lunch plate from a daily array of seasonal options.

At La Cocina:

  • No bouillon cubes or artificial seasonings; only a homemade spice blend

  • No soybean or corn oils

  • Everything made from scratch, with a focus on ingredients sourced from the community garden and community farm

The menu at La Cocina boasts a fusion of deliciousness and nutrition, paying homage to our cultural heritage. With prices tailored to suit the average Dominican household, this eatery is accessible as are all comedores in the country.

La Cocina was designed with a zero-waste approach. In action, this means that all of our food scraps are composted at the community garden, preventing organic waste from ending up at landfills. No food is ever discarded, any food not sold is immediately distributed to the families in need in our database.

In addition, Cabarete Sostenible utilizes the kitchen to lead nutrition talks, cooking workshops and creatively transforms surplus harvests from our community garden into products like pickled peppers, tomato sauce, nut butters, and more. La Cocina is also the meeting point for our volunteer-led initiatives such as the Food Aid Program and Questionnaire.

La Cocina serves as a multi-use space where community meetings, gatherings and advocacy occurs. The space is also available for private group visits and rentals.
